The Carriage House Inn was a delightful find in Emmitsburg. The restaurant is located just down the street from the Seton Shrine, but it is definitely worth a stop when traveling on US Highway 15.

The interior is quaint and nicely decorated. The luncheon menu ranged from soups, sandwiches and burgers to main courses. I selected the Broiled Crab Cake Platter. This came with a tossed salad to start, with the house tomato and vinaigrette dressing. The crab cake was made on the premises and was nicely full of crab meat. Mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables rounded it out. When I found they had Blackberry Gelato for dessert, I could not resist! Quite a delicious lunch.

The Carriage House Inn is part of the Emmitsburg Historic District. I thought it might have been a 19th century wayside tavern, but learned it actually had been built in 1857 as a feed store and then was a broom factory. It was converted to a restaurant in 1943.

Yum! New Year's Day dinner at the Carriage House was quite a treat! This charming establishment is housed in a building from 1857, and it's now on the National Registry for Historic Places. The building has been a feed store, a broom factory and a bus depot. Now it's just a great place to eat.

We visited the Carriage on New Year's Day, so typical New Year's fare (pork, kraut, beets) was available as the daily special. I opted for the French onion soup to start, and it was very yummy. Some of my other dinner companions thoroughly enjoyed the cream of crab soup. For the main course, I chose a ham steak, and it was delicious as well. The blackberry pie a la mode for dessert was a nice end to my dining experience.

The wait staff was incredibly friendly, and we were able to enjoy our time together without feeling hurried.

If you're in the mood for a great meal in historical Emmitsburg, you know where to go!
