Fun & friendly pub with good eats and entertainment Jun 20, 2012
Situated a couple of minutes walk from the lanes and central Brighton the Caroline of Brunswick stands out on the short street that it's on.

This is a pub that has a distinct feel and vibe to it. From the moment you walk in, you can tell that this is a punk/metal/biker/(pick your alternative scene bar). The giant 3 headed hell hound above the bar and tattooed staff tend to give this away. That being said you don't have to fit into any of the above subcultures to come here and have a good time. I cannot stress enough not to let this put you off even if this isn't the sort of place you'd normally come to.

Despite what some may think of as an intimidating presentation in the form of the decor, staff and patrons, everyone here is very friendly, welcoming and good natured, regardless of whether your appearance matches the vibe or not. No one seems to judge in here which makes for a great atmosphere when it gets busy. The music that is played here is varied as well both with the live sets and the stuff that’s available on the juke box or put on by the bar staff.

Despite the pubs dark and grungy appearance the food here is actually pretty good. It's by no means restaurant fodder but it does the best plate of chilli nachos you can get in Brighton and the Sunday roasts sell out quickly here too (get there before 2:30 to avoid disappointment). You can also get decent burgers and there is a vegetarian alternative for everything on the menu. The portion sizes are very large and the quality is good for the price though the menu never changes.

As for pub games, there is a fruit machine, quiz machine as well as a few old board games and a pool table which is free play on certain days!

Live bands play upstairs on certain nights and at least once a week there will be a comedy night of sorts in the function room.

There are benches outside but being honest this isn't the best spot for people watching in Brighton unless you like watching traffic.

The drink selection is good with some good beer brands and ales as well as the usual brands on tap. There is also a good selection of spirits and bottled beers and ciders behind the bar.

All in all this is a fun pub to visit, though I would recommend it to newcomers on a weekend otherwise it's a little bit too quiet in here and one of the main reasons to come is the atmosphere and it just feels empty when the patrons that make a large part of it aren't there. It's a great place to get chatting to random people and this can be a good place to either begin a night out or have a comfortable evening. I'd recommend going with friends but this is not really the sort of place I'd take a date (unless they loved the heavy metal/alternative scene). All in all a great place to visit for a fun and different night out in Brighton or if you fancy a good plate of nachos or a mean Sunday roast!
