Carolina Beach Overview
Carolina Beach might be the hippest town in North Carolina, a small community along the ocean just south of Wilmington. Technically located on Pleasure Island, Carolina Beach is really part of the southern tip of the Wilmington peninsula. The construction of Snow's Cut --- a man-made waterway between the ocean and the Cape Fear River --- in the 1930's is what created Pleasure Island, and the bridge spanning Snow's Cut is also what made the town accessible.
The town is abutted by Kure (cure-ee) Beach and you really can't distinguish where one stops and the other begins. There are quality beaches here and the parking is free, unlike the more popular Wrightsville Beach just north in Wilmington. Carolina Beach State Park is just outside of town, lying along Snow's Cut and providing several (easy) hiking trails. Venus flytraps only grow naturally within 60 miles of Wilmington and you can see some here if your timing is good!
This town has plenty of good restaurants and great dive bars, as well as a few boardwalk attractions from years gone by. This is NOT a major resort area and may not appeal to those seeking a broad array of modern entertainment options. But if you want to relax and soak up a good vibe, Carolina Beach is a terrific spot to weigh anchor.
