Carolina Beach State Park Reviews
Carolina Beach State Park (and the Oct 09, 2009
An inviting tidbit around our new home is that it is the native environs of the Venus Fly Trap and the plant only occurs in the wild within sixty miles of Wilmington, NC. So this morning I headed to Carolina Beach State Park for the “Carnivorous Plant” tour to check them out. This beautiful State Park is less than ten miles from our house and we’ve been here previously, but being unable to espy the wily meat-eating plant on our own it was time to have the experts show us the light (and by “us”, I mean just me since my sleepyhead family didn’t want to get up this morning, lol).
The State Park sits on the corner of the Cape Fear River and Snow’s Cut (a man made canal permitting convenient boat access to the Atlantic Ocean) and features modern facilities, a well maintained camping area (83 sites available) and a marina. There are about six miles of trails in the park and my family has hiked most of it There are considerably diverse habitats here and the trails along the river are simply gorgeous. The Visitor’s Center is a great facility, featuring some terrific environmental exhibits which offer a wealth of information on carnivorous plants.
So I arrived at the trail head for the Fly Trap Trail this morning (the free “Carnivorous Plant” tour starts here every Saturday at 10AM), meeting the ranger and about a dozen others. The tour covers only a half mile and takes about thirty-five minutes, but was quite interesting. We got to see a Venus Fly Trap, several varieties of Pitcher Plant and a carnivorous plant I never heard of, the Sundew. The ranger provided a lot of fascinating factoids and it really was a fun time!
Other free tours include “Poisonous Plants” (departs Saturdays at 11AM from the Visitor’s Center) and a “River Walk” (departs Sundays at 2PM from the Marina). Plenty to do here and a recommended visit!
