4 crazy days in the southern part of Holland Oct 18, 2008
Carnaval (Dutch word) = Carnival!

Carnival is mostly celebrated in the Southern parts of the Netherlands , so that means “below the rivers” That means in the provinces of Limburg and North-Brabant people celebrate this feast.

Carnival is a Catholic feast by origin. Carnival is being celebrated from Friday night to Tuesday night but it ends on Wednesday with a drink and haring (raw fish)! Wednesday is also called Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday is the first day of the “Vastenperiode”. In this period people would eat and drink less than they normally do. Beside that they will not eat or do certain things on certain days! Candy is not doable in this period! The children have to save up candy if they got any during the 40 days but eating is not possible.

They couldn’t eat it during this period, but had to wait until after the 40-day period. Carnival was a feast of having fun and eating and drinking before starting this 40-day period. Also the Catholic church and school ask children to save their money during this period and after this period to give it to the church/ school for projects in Africa. Since its a Catholic feast by origin it is mostly celebrated in the south of the Netherlands since most of the Catholic people used to live in the south.

Carnival is very funny because it brings out the party animal in everyone! The whole town will be dressed to Carnival and that makes it so much fun. Every town has a different name during Carnival and us inhabitants get different names too! Besides that we have different money for only Carnival, different newspaper, different town flag and different mayor! It is like with Carnival you are leaving in another world, town!

Prince Carnival is the boss of the town.

He has a group of 11 people to help him with that and they are called "De Raad van 11".

The whole Carnival season starts pretty early! On the 11th day of the 11th month to be exact. De Raad van 11 and Prince Carnival are being chosen and the first feast of the Carnival season is being held then. Each year the town as it theme with carnival and the Carnivalgroups can build there floats for the parade on the theme. The prince of Carnival and "Raad van Elf" announce the theme the 11 of November. Before the exactly feast you'll have every weekend from 11-11 till Carnival feast theme weekends, that can be like singing contest o comedian contest etc.

It is great to celebrate Carnival!

Carnival is about dressing up and having fun together.

Everybody goes out every night but mostly the party starts early in the day already! Parades are being held in different towns and all the towns are being decorated. In my town signs are being hung everywhere that have sayings in our dialect.

On Sunday we have the big parade, on Monday the children parade and on Tuesday evening the electric parade!

Then after carnival there is the feast that is especially for the people that work during Carnival.

I am looking forward to upcoming Carnival and you?

PS. Look at my blog for more picture on Carnival.
