Carnival customs Feb 08, 2009
Carnival is mainly celebrated in the south of The Netherlands (below the main rivers) and has a couple of customs:
- Everybody wears some sort of a costume. Some people go for a complete outfit, others just put on a weird hat.
- It’s ‘normal’ to start drinking and partying around noon during Carnival. It’s rare that people get aggressive or annoying, they’re usually just very cheerful.
- The only music that is heard during Carnival is special ‘Carnival music’. It’s sung in Dutch and is quite horrible (hence the drinking).
Tilburg has a Carnival parade in the centre of town on Sunday afternoon, festivities take on during the entire day.
Dates of Carnival for the coming years:
2011: 6 to 8 March
2012: 19 to 21 February
2013: 10 to 12 February
2014: 2 to 4 March
2015: 15 to 17 February
2016: 7 to 9 February
