Carnaval Den Bosch 2009 Feb 23, 2009
Every year in February we celebrate Carnaval in 's-Hertogenbosch. The city is in this period named "Oeteldonk". The symbol is a "Oetel", a frog because in old days the city was surrounded by swamps with lot of frogs. Also this frog was chozen to "Van den Oetelaar" a bisshop from Den Dungen who was against this "anti-religious" festival. Also you find our flag during Carnaval which every Bossenaar wears: red white yellow. On monday the famous parade comes to town, on that they many tourists are coming to see the parade and celebrate the Carnaval with us in the various pubs in Town. It is one off the most famous feasts of the year.

Every year the Carnavalsgroup itself choose a new theme and make the clothing and wagons. You are free to choose what theme you pick. So you must be creative every year. It makes the Parade every year interesting.

Thanks for sharing, looks like in Den Bosch more of a fairy tale theme, or is it each year they have a theme to it?

We wear red white and yellow (I am wearing it right now, because I have the last day Carnaval now) because it is our city flag during Carnaval. But nobody knows any more why we chose this colours, these are very old. We dress weird and celebrate because of a Catholic feast. After this feast the vasten period (it is a bit like Ramadan) begins, which means sobering up with food and drink for 40 days for the relegion. Hope you understand it!
