on a 93 degree day... May 30, 2011
I drive past Carl's on a regular basis just running around down in Fredericksburg, VA. After a trip with my sweet pup to the local dog park today, we decided that today would finally be the day for a bit of Carl's ice cream. We stopped and got a bowl of strawberry. The only flavors are chocolate, vanilla and strawberry, but it was fantastic ice cream. Thick and creamy and really hit the spot on this hot day. Cones, bowls, milkshakes and sundaes... It was $1.95 for a small bowl and BEWARE... they only take cash!!! There were lines but things are served simply so it moved quickly. Great spot to stop at if you're in town on a warm, sunny day! :)

Authenic soft serve ice cream at Carl's Jun 25, 2010
Carls' has been selling ice cream (or creme as Carl's call it) in Fredericksburg since 1947. They must be doing something right! And yes, they dish up a deliciously thick, creamy, soft-serve ice cream.

Carl's uses the same Electro-Freeze ice cream machines that were installed in the 1940s and make their creme on the premises in chocolate, vanilla and strawberry flavors. This is the real thing. It's sold by the cone, dish or as a sundae. (The product is actually known as Frozen Custard, it contains more eggs than regular ice cream.)

I recommend Carl's. It's just the thing on a warm day of road tripping! It's a very popular place and there may be a line at the walk-up counter.

Carl's accepts only cash.
