Caribbean Spice Gainesville Reviews
"The Spice"...great and cheap food for a college budget. Jan 14, 2009
Okay I know alot of my reviews are tied to places in Gainesville, where I went to school. But if you're always working or stuck in the library, its hard to cook at home sometimes. Especially if your roomie eats all your food all the time. But hey, at least all these places are fit for a poor college kid's budget.
Anyway, you can't get a cheaper meal then the one you get at "The Spice" (as the locals call it). The place is located about two blocks from the main campus. Just head down University Ave towards downtown, and before you know it...you're in front of the place. To say its a hole in the wall would be too kind. You walk in, there's a fridge with sodas in it, the counter with two stools (if you're lucky), a crappy old boom-box playing reggae all day, and a old (like 30 years old) poster of a well portioned lady welcoming you to Jamaica.
But the main reason kids keep coming here is the food. For $3, thats right $3 - you get a patty (either spicy, mild, or veggie), a piece of cake (either carrot or banana), a can of soda, and a piece of to die for coco bread. The bread is awesome!!!!!!!! God, I miss Gainesville. Everything fits into a brown paper lunch bag, so you can either eat it there (standing up) or take it to go. I always took it back to campus and ate on the lawn. What you do is open up the coco bread, stuff the patty into it and you have yourself a wonderfully flavorful sandwich. I mean the thing is filling enough that I save the cake for later in the day as a pre-dinner snack.
The bulk of the business here is the lunch special. But if you're brave enough to go back and try dinner...you're in for a treat. They have a curried goat dish that is awesome too. Not too spicy, with tender pieces of goat meat in curry served over white rice. And the jerk chicken is great too. But it can be a little spicy at times. This too is served over white rice, with a piece of coco bread.
Like I said, $3 for a meal that can last all day is great for a starving college kid's budget. Add to that great flavor and you can't beat it.
