A FREE Museum that should not be missed Jan 10, 2011
Anyone planning to visit the Welsh capital city of Cardiff really shouldn’t miss the opportunity to see the Welsh National Museum and Art Gallery located in Cardiff’s City Centre. I truly had the best of time when visiting this attraction, as I trawled through the many rooms filled with various artefacts, paintings, statues and cabinets filled with exciting snippets from history. The other amazing thing about the museum is the location, like most things in the capital city it is a stones throw away from the castle and hustle and bustle of the busy shopping centre. This was brilliant as I had planned to visit the castle earlier that day anyway and found out that it was a 2 minute walk away. I found the museums location both to be extremely convenient and handy as this was something I had been interested to see myself, but for anyone passing through or someone who is not aware of it, it’s a great FREE addition to any travellers schedule.
If you’re travelling alone, in a couple or with children the ground floor level of the Museum will surely impress! Filled with Geology from volcanic rock to dinosaur skeletons, this section is set out so that you walk through the geological history of Wales, which is well displayed and informative. It fun and educational for both adults and children and the dinosaurs and fossils on display are first rate and worth a visit to the museum to see these alone! I spent well over an hour and a bit reading though all the displays and came away educated and happy that I had taken the time to walk through the Museum doors.
The art displayed upstairs is also equally first rate, including Renoir, Van Gough and my favourite Monet!! They also have many short exhibitions in some the smaller rooms. You can literally spend days sitting and admiring these beautiful paintings.
The have many different exhibitions through out the year, which are always worth checking out. They are very accommodating towards and children, and have activity packs on hand with many things for them to do.
The building itself is rather impressive and is extremely grand. Sporting elegant columns as you walk through the entrance and the ever to apt welsh dragon on the roof of the building this building is a true delight to walk though. The high ceiling and shined floors make for the perfect setting for all the exhibits and have a truly cultured feel.
Considering that it is FREE to visit this amazing attraction, I would say it’s definitely worth a look! Even if museums as they go aren’t always your thing I still think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at our much this museum has to offer.
Overall I would give this attraction 10 out of 10 and would highly recommend it!! Lets face it, for a FREEBIE it can’t be bad and if you don’t like it you can turn around walk out and it wouldn’t have cost you a penny. On the other hand, you may have an extremely memorable visit for a bargain – nothing at all and we all like that!
