A FAIRY-TALE!!! The first view of the upper town of Carcassonne is the best. You'll get surprised by the look, does this still exist? YES IT DOES!!! Perched high above the river Aude, the Cité is a must see for every visitor nearby. Don't be fooled though, this UNESCO world heritage site is only a 19th-century restoration by Viollet-le-Duc. He recreated a magnificent citadel with stout ramparts and pennant-capped towers. The medieval looks makes it unique. Thanks to Kate Mosse and her bril...

Today we set out to discover the sights of the historic city of Carcassonne.   It was the hottest day so far with temperatures reaching the mid to high thirties, and the car journey was painfully hot.   When we reached Carcassonne we headed straight for ‘La Cité médiévale de Carcassonne’, the medieval city in Carcassonne.  The fairytale turrets of the cite looking over the modern city as a constant reminder of the Cities heritage.  We parked in a small car...

Carcassonne is probably my second favorite place we visited in France (Mont St. Michel takes first). Located in the Languedoc-Roussillion region close to the Spanish border, the fortified medieval city has been in use since the time of the Romans. The Cathars took refuge in the walled town, but were forced out by crusaders in 1209. So much history is involved with this amazingly beautiful town. It's a must see for any history buffs out there! While looking at all the souvenir shops, etc. lin...

On the road to Carcassonne

After a few hours in my sisters Yaris, on the beautifull highways of France surounded by lavender and sunflower fields we arrived in Carcassonne under a burning sun and 36 degres! The maps were very helpfull and so was the A/C!! We quickly dumped our bags at the hotel and headed straight to the "Cité". Carcassonne is a medieval fortress composed of a cathedral, castel and small village build within the walls. Its history and modifications made throughout the years only&...

Another fortified city
posted by:
Aug 17, 2007 - Sep 01, 2007
Carcasonne is another fortified city within day-tripping distance of Toulouse.  Again rather over-touristed and rather commercialised but I wouldn't have missed it because of this. The fortification consists of a double ring of ramparts and 53 towers.  Like Mont St Michel, various parts of the city are of different ages.  To make it worse, much of the place was restored in the late 1800s with stylistic and architectural errors.

Bonjour encore! Update on the week...school keeps me quite busy (haha when does it not?). It is a little stressful right now because we are taking 2 full length courses, cramming what would be a semester's worth of work into a mere 3 weeks. Mercifully, it will be over next week. (We begin our courses at Paul Valery, the French University here, on the 4th of July.) Wednesday we spent an enjoyable night listening to a variety of music...it was "La Fete de la Musique" here in France, a celebrat...

spur of the moment decisions

This was the plan: to catch the 10:30am bus from Avignon to Barcelona.  Sounds so simple, right?  Well I arrived at the bus station @ 10am & then left it again around 12:15, as the bus was not apparent and I decided that two hours waiting for a bus was about my limit.  This was a Eurolines bus - the major Europe-wide bus company - not some dodgy local deal, but as it was a Sunday the Eurolines office was closed, so about 6 of us just stood around waiting, not knowing what w...
