Caracol is a large Mayan ruin located in the Cayo District. The site was discovered in 1937 and began being excavated around 1985. With road construction, this site is easy to get to and open to the public, but be sure to pack a lunch.

Caana is the largest man made structure found in Belize and is pretty impressive. Going through the site, you can see the splendor of the ruins as well as the wildlife that is found around you. You can find howler monkeys, spider monkeys, and many birds.

Caracol once rivaled Tikal, in Guatemala. There are over 35,000 buildings which have been identified. Ball courts, stelae, alters, and observation towers can be seen in this site.

On the way back from Caracol, be sure to check out Rio On pools, a connection of many clear ponds. Refreshing and beautiful.

This site is very impressive and highly recommended for the history buffs, the wildlife lovers, or just the interested traveler.

From 2001-'03 I served as a Peace Corps Volunteer at Hol Chan Marine Reserve in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize. I acted as the biologist and environmental outreach coordinator for HCMR. It was a very fulfilling experience. Belize and San Pedro will always hold a little piece of my heart. Note: many of these pictures are scanned images of film photos and are therefore not of a very high quality. They are here for the content. Sorry!
