Lordy, lordy, what a mansion! Mar 28, 2012
Okay, so I didn’t stay here, but being treated to a deluxe introduction with such exuberance instilled a need to share this lodging option. After a fun lunch with Mike, my former employer who owns a travel club, he asked if I was interested in accompanying him for a ‘walk through’ of a property they were considering adding to their portfolio. I had never been on one of these excursions and it proved to be a fun experience.

The woman who escorted us through the mansion was knowledgeable and constantly bubbly. I interpreted this enthusiasm as devotion layered on customers, so I suspect the service is terrific. The inn was begun 35 years ago by a husband and wife as an escape from corporate life in New York and they continue to oversee operations to this day. I was struck by our guide’s stressing how all of the period decorations had been personally acquired by the wife and then she recited the tenure of her fellow employees (the average seemed to be twenty years) – making it obvious how genuine the care and consideration of the establishment is.

But let’s move on to the accommodations. Everything is Victorian grandeur, from the comfortable lounge to the awesome kitchen to the actual rooms. Even the outside yard is immaculately landscaped and appears to be a magnificent spot to sit out during the evening. There are three classes of rooms and you’ll pay a pretty penny for any one, but I would hazard you won’t complain about the value.

The final brilliant touch which motivates me to recommend this accommodation is their rate schedule. I’ve shared how insane Kennebunkport traffic is during the summer months, and Captain Lord seems to realize and respect this. As opposed to posting rates for “high” and “low” seasons, they only reference the cheaper period as “Serenity Season” --- perfect!
