Instead of paying for a day tour, we drove to Cape Tribulation from Cairns via the Daintree Rainforest. The total cost for 2 days car hire, including petrol, was $60 each. Much more economical than a day trip and much more relaxing.

Following the coastal path along Highway 1, we stopped off at coastal lookouts all the way through to the Daintree. At Daintree we headed onto the Daintree River to spot crocodiles and wildlife. We wasn’t disappointed and the guide was very knowledgeable about the species and the resident crocodiles. The tour companies work together so you are sure to spot something!!

Crossing the river to Cape Tribulation you have to board a cable ferry. They only accept cash, you have been warned. Last ferry back across is mid night.

A few lookouts later we were on the boardwalk at Cape Tribulation Rainforest. This is a short walk through the foliage to the beach. AMAZING!!! Lots of signs warning of the crocodile and stinger season which runs October to May so stay out of the water if you are here these months.

Cape Tribulation Beach is the most beautiful thing you will experience on this tour! The water was warm and shallow and the time that we arrived, early evening, the beach was almost deserted. The oldest rainforest meets the beach. The sand was soft and fine and great for exfoliating on a backpacker’s budget!

Not to be missed whilst in Cairns.
