A short stay in Cape Town as a tourist rather than a traveller

I'm just about old enough to remember Apartheid and PW Botha. So Cape Town was never on my visit list. When a trip came up from work, I was very blaze. What a missed opportunity that would have been. Whilst the Townships are still in clear sight and at odds with the oppulence of the rest of the city, an effort has definitely been made to reverse the errors of the past. Yes, poverty is evident, but so is a quiet guilt in the voices of many of the white South Africans I spoke to. Normal big cit...

Cape Town, 1 August 2008: Entries have landed, and judges have disembarked with their chosen finalists in each of the 10 categories. Now it is the public’s turn to voice their opinion as to who the continent’s best retreat should be. South AfricaIt’s the signs that flash past you as you’re driving which remind you that you’re in Africa not the South of France or San Francisco. It’s an easy mistake. There’s the same slatted wooden low rise architecture of San Fran, the same wind-bent trees battered by years of Atlantic squalls into makeshift weeping willows that you see on Highway One . Then there are the splashes of colourful fauna, the jaggedly beautiful cliffs looming over meandering seaside drives. This could...

Twee weken Kaapstad
posted by:
Jun 10, 2008 - Aug 28, 2008

We took a great 4 hour drive or so around this beautiful part of Cape Town. There was so much to see, from the mountains, to the ocean to the guys selling curios along the street. I can't forget the people who were riding bikes up these steep hills almost without any effort at all. My legs, lungs and a feet all hurt just watching them. The ocean was incredible. I just stood around and watch the waves crash along the rocks. I also liked the bay, it was just like God has quieted this part of ...

South Africa 2004: Cape Town Travel Photos

During the summer of 2004 I was one of 5 British people who went out to Africa with a 2,000 strong team of international volunteers to try and bring aid, help and hope. Our work included prison ministry, helping in orphanages, working in the hospices with people with HIV/Aids, children's work, door to door evangelism and working with the homeless.
