I almost didn't go up it... if i knew what iwas going to miss out on i would have been so upset! Table mountain is absolutely spectacular, its a national park and has all sorts of interesting plants and lizards and things. at one point, when i was the only person on the footpath for ages, i actually got stopped by a lizard who was crossing the path to grab a fly. it was really funny, then it just sort of scuttled off. And the view is phenomenal. When i was up there it was partly clear and par...

So we are finally here and finally on our way to our adventures. After a delayed 11 hour flight we arrived in Cape Town a bit bleery eyed to be greeted by drizzle- we could have been in England! We got through immigration smoothly and then made our way to the hostel driven by a bus driver who didn't have a clue where he was going and proceeded to smoke and look at the map while he was driving! The Hostel is amazing, really beautiful with grand stair cases and lovely rooms. Its really close t...

June 3rd I had heard rumors that Cape Town was beautiful, however, I have had the good fortune of traveling around a lot of the world and I have yet to see a more beautiful city. It occupies one of the most stunning locations. In the middle of the city stands a tall mountain which is surrounded by beaches and wine vineyards. I was so overwhelmed by the beauty, I did not know where to look first! After lunch at the charming Victoria & Alfred Waterfront harbor, we took a ferry to Robben ...

Our last bit of sightseeing.  Today we set out on a trip to Cape Point, that in the summer would be fantastic, but we unfortunately didn't pick the right day for it. Our guide first of all took us to a place on the coast  - Hout Bay - where we could go on a boat to a little island to see seals.  There were nine of us on the bus, and nobody moved - we felt sea sick just looking at the swell today.  Next stop was a penguin colony, and thankfully on land.  Several thousa...

For about 3 consecutive years, I visited South Africa and only stopped in Johannesburg, however my luck changed when my boyfriend of 3 years Don, decided we needed some quality time and booked a 10 days trip to Cape Town in 2002. It was such am amazing, memorable trip. This was a beautiful place to watch the sun set. table mountain was stunning as the city sat below it. The sand was clean, but the water was very cold. People were out doing this thing called kite surfing. Was the most interesting thing to see. We watched as these guys jumped way up into the air over crashing waves and land with out a hitch. There were a few who took some natsy spills, but it was like watching a ballet on the water. There was a rainbow off in the distance, hard to capture o...

Monday 27th February Today we went to Robben Island at 1pm, which took about 30 mins to get to. Upon arrival we boarded a tour bus and went around the island, learning about the political struggles for black people pre-1990. The island had four prisons and we were told about numerous jail break attempts. The bus tour also showed us the leper colony that was once on the island. The second part of the tour was given by a former inmate of the maximum security prison, who stood up for his rights...

I can't believe I've only been here a few days. I already feel like I have seen so much. It began to sink in when driving from the airport to Capetown when we drove past the Townships (shanty towns), these were images I had only ever seen on the TV and in Geography textbooks at school.  We are in the Big Blue Hostel near the Waterfront which is beautiful. After unpacking we headed to the Waterfront, we saw Sealions in the habour, live bands playing and wandered around craft fairs. On o...

I hope everyone is well back home and for some of you, on the road.  I wish I had my laptop with me as you can find plenty of free wifi zones, esp in Egypt and S Africa.  Typing on the Blackberry is a bit tedious, but getting used to it and I am amazing fellow travelers at the speed at which I can misspell words on the thing, but it does allow me to keep in touch, and more than few travelers have been sold on the device as well; I think I should be in the marketing department for Bl...

If you want a true cultural experience of the happiness that many South Africans have for life you must ride a commuter train in the economy section of course.  The commuters were singing as I was traveling to the beach for the day!  How many large metro areas in the United States have singing commuters!

I have spent almost a full week now in Cape Town.  It has been somewhat of a frustrating experience for me in some ways.  First off, I had a bit of traveler's fatigue when I got here.  I was not interested in really doing anything.  I managed to move past that over time, but I had to deal first with accommodation issues.  When I arrived I was only able to book a dorm way off Long Street (the happening part of town) in a bit of a sketchy area.  It reminded me of R...
