Cape Point Overview
Cape Point is located at the southeast corner of the Cape Peninsula, a mountainous and scenic landform that runs north-south for about thirty kilometres at the extreme southwestern tip of the African continent. The cape is located at 34°21′26″S 18°29′51″E.
A lighthouse was built here in 1859 at 249m above sea level. This made it very ineffective in mist which mandated the establishment of the second lighthouse at 87 meters.
The newer lighthouse, built in 1914, is the most powerful on the South African coast with a range of 63 kilometres.
The original lighthouse still stands here and is now used as a centralized monitoring point for all the lighthouses in South Africa.
