Cape Otway Overview

Cape Otway marks the point where the waters of Bass Strait meet those of the Southern Ocean. It is the southernmost point along the Great Ocean Road. Between here and Antarctica there is nothing but 1,300 kms of open sea.

The lighthouse on the cape was built in 1848. It marked a very dangerous coastline. Ships to Melbourne had to find the 40 kms wide gap between this coast and King Island, which was a difficult task with 19th century navigation methods. Ships from Europe usually sailed far south, close to Antarctica, to make use of the west-eastern currents. After three months on the oceans the tiniest mistake in time measuring per day
summed up. Many ships crashed on the cliffs west of Cape Otway which became known as "Shipwreck Coast".
