Cape May Lighthouse Oct 09, 2014
There are two separate entities where the lighthouse is. There is a State Park (Cape May Point State Park), and there is the Lighthouse. The lighthouse is a three star visit lighthouse. There are charges for you to climb it, but I wasn't going to do that. So on the advice of the lady at the State Park Museum, we went to the Oil House and asked to see the video about the lighthouse. He gave us a laptop and we went out and sat in the shade of the lighthouse and looked at the video. This included someone climbing to the top (explaining with increased breathlessness the history) and then he went up into the lantern room which isn't available to regular lighthouse visitors.

The lighthouse page says that it: was built in 1859.. In 1882, the Cape May Ocean Wave reported that "the gentleman superintendent in charge [of the lighthouse], Mr. Samuel Stillwell, takes pleasure in showing visitors who have the nerve and strength of limb to the top, the interior of the lantern, and explaining the interesting operations of the light. A very picturesque view of the sea, bay, and country may also be obtained from the giddy heights of the edifice."

In 1897, the newspaper made it clear that a visit to the lighthouse was a requisite part of one's vacation: "One of the interesting features to Cape May summer visitors is a journey to the top of the lighthouse."

Admission $8 adults; $3 children (ages 3-12). Purchase tickets at the Lighthouse during hours of operation. There are also combination tickets for this lighthouse and others nearby. Free on-site parking/RV-friendly
