Cape Coast is the capital of the Fante people and Central Region of Ghana. It is home to the University of Cape Coast and several boarding schools that produced many of the leaders of the country and several other accomplished Ghanaians.
The main attraction in the city is Cape Coast Castle, a World Heritage Site. In the past, it was occupied by various countries and it was where many slaves were held before the treacherous journey to the Americas. Other attractions include Fort Victoria and Fort William, a crab statue in the city center, and the Cape Coast Centre for National Culture.
