This is a small town is abundant with parks, comunity sports, oriented enertainment, good food, a nice historical downtown. The schools are recognized among the best across the state, boasting exceptional student achievment. The city has one of the lowest crime rates in Texas. Canyon is home to West Texas A&M University, a member of the A&M University system, wich offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs.
Close to the town is Palo Duro Canyon State Park opened on July 4, 1934 and contains 26,275 acres of the scenic, northern most portion of the Palo Duro Canyon. The Civilian Conservation Corp of the 1930's constructed most of the buildings and roads still in use by park staff and visitors.
The Canyon is 120 miles long, as much as 20 miles wide, and has a maximum depth of more than 800 feet. Its elevation at the rim is 3,500 feet above sea level. It is often claimed that Palo Duro Canyon is the second largest canyon in the United States. The largest, the Grand Canyon, is 277 miles long, 18 miles wide, and 6,000 ft. deep.

Difficult but, all things including this journey are coming to an end; however, one "curtain call" found us in beautiful Palo Duro Canyon, in Canyon TX. The opportunity to drive through it, just as we did the Badlands in South Dakota, added to the drama surrounding its history; i.e., an 1874 Calvary raid on an Indian encampment. After this stop we found our way back to Rt40 East for the long ride home. See you soon!
