Cannon Valley Trail Cannon Falls Reviews
Wonderful, paved biking trail Aug 21, 2010
The Cannon Valley Trail is a 19.7 mile paved trail between Cannon Falls and Red Wing, Minnesota. The trail is along a former railroad grade and parallels the beautiful Cannon River. The trail decends 115 ft total elevation over the nearly 20 mile trail.
The trail is open year round and is popular for biking, skiier, hiking, rollerblading and even skateboarding. You do need to purchase a wheel pass ($3 daily) if you will be using wheels for recreation on the trail April 1 - November 1. A ski pass is needed in winter. The small cost is well worth the price! The passes can be purchased at several local businesses, but also along the trail near the trail heads and at the Welch parking area.
There are parking areas in Cannon Falls and Red Wing, as well as Welch - the halfway point. We brought two cars and parked one at the finish and brought one to the start so we didn't have to bike the trail twice. I recommend biking downhill, which is from Cannon Falls to Welch to Red Wing.
If you are into geocaching, there are approximately 20 geocaches along the bike trail between Cannon Falls and Welch. Bring a flashlight. There is also a small cave you can explore, right off the trail - make sure you have a flashlight!
The trail does not have any ammenties for most of the length. The Welch station does have toilets and drinking water. There is nowhere to buy food along the trail, though, so pack snacks! Depending on how fast you bike and how often you stop, this is a great way to spend a couple of hours!
If you like to canoe, kayak, or tube, consider floating down the Cannon River instead.
