Canino's Produce Reviews
A Flavorful Market in Houston Oct 08, 2009
The largest farmers market in Houston is located on Airline Drive. Beginning with Canino's Produce in the front, this market is an adventure as fresh produce, including Mexican and Cajun specialties, is heavily featured. This market, which has been in Houston for over 50 years, is consistently busy and popular with local restaurant chefs.
A visit to the market begins at Canino's, which is basically a large produce store with excellent prices. I love exploring the stands of peppers, dried fruits, unique salsas, hot sauces and unusual produce. House plants are also available. Behind Canino's, however, is the real treat. Like being in an open market in Mexico, independent vendors have stalls set up behind Canino's. Many of the signs are in Spanish and unique foods, like cactus paddles (nopales), are readily available. The individual stalls are beautifully arranged, with brightly colored produce on display. At some stalls, there is even bargaining. Very fresh tamales may also be available which are delicious. Around Canino's are various spice shops and Spanish bakeries, located just across the street. When Houstonians talk about going to a farmers market, the question is usually "Oh, the one on Airline Drive?". I would definitely recommend Canino's as this is a great example of some of the different cultures living in the Houston area. The produce is incredibly fresh, some of the goods are unique and the prices are a bargain. |
