Cancun Taqueria Berkeley Reviews
Feb 08, 2006
Cancun Taqueria is probably best known for its large selection of
salsa-- they've got over thirty different kinds, including but not
limited to mango, strawberry, avocado, pumpkin, garlic, shrimp,
pineapple, mole, cilantro, tomatilla, cactus, and melon. The variety is
novel and a welcome break from your general mild and hot sauces, but
it's not even the best thing about Cancun Taqueria.
love the prawn burrito with mole sauce, item #25. I always get it when
I go, although I've tried plenty of other dishes as well. This burrito
is seriously one of the reasons I enjoy living in Berkeley. I would
rate this burrito a 5, although the rest of the restaurant probably
deserves somewhere between a 3 or 4. The fresh fruit drinks are also
great-- I think the strawberry juice is
divine. The watermelon is okay, and I haven't tried the horchata.
addition to the food, I enjoy Cancun Taqueria's atmosphere. The
decorations are lively and they're usually playing good Mexican music.
You can watch the cooks as they prepare your food behind a glass
partition, and the taqueria is usually full of patrons.
Taqueria is a little more expensive than your average burrito joint,
but if you get the right entree (prawn burrito with mole sauce!), it's
well worth the extra money. I must stress that some of their stuff
isn't the greatest-- I think I had a quesadilla once that didn't really
blow me away, and the fish burritos aren't as flavorful as they could
be-- so you've got to order the right thing.

I didn't really think much of this place, and I always thought the random assortment of salsas was kind of gimmicky, but then I followed Angie's advice and got the Prawn Burrito with Mole Sauce. I have to admit, it was pretty good, if a bit heavy in flavor. Then I had the Strawberry Juice which blew me away. I had never had Strawberry juice before (didn't even know they made it!) but it was sweet and delicious and if I had ordered a gallon of it I probably would have drank it all and licked the pulp off the insides of the jug. I'd give this place 3-stars for the food and 5-stars for the strawberry juice. For a relaxing and relatively inexpensive night, grab a bite to eat here and then head across the street to catch a movie at the California Theatre.
