Parliament House

Today Kevin Rudd, on his first day of leading parliament, finally apologised for the Australian government's actions towards the Aboriginal people. “Today we honour the Indigenous peoples of this land, the oldest continuing cultures in human history. We reflect on their past mistreatment. We reflect in particular on the mistreatment of those who were Stolen Generations - this blemished chapter in our nation’s history. The time has now come for the nation to turn a new page in Austra...

Once a year, for a month in spring, Canberra puts on a colourful show of bulbs in the beautiful Commonwealth Park on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin. One year I spent a nice couple of hours tiptoeing through the tulips.

We have enjoyed exploring these tiny little portions of the globe, and it's been a mind-expanding and perspective-shifting experience. We have seen some things that we've always wanted to see, and have been surprised by things and places that we never knew existed. We have caught up with friends that we've longed to catch up with, as well as meeting some great new friends along the way. We have been challenged, inspired, energised, fatigued, encouraged, lost, excited, puzzled and more over th...

The Grand Prix wasn't till the Sunday so we took a little detour and visited Canberra. Other Backpackers had told us there wasn't much going on there but we wanted to see for ourselves and to say we have been there. I wish we hadn't bothered to be honest, Canberra was very poor in the terms of a Capital City. The only thing we did here was take a Photo of Parliment Square and stopped to get petrol, lol.

Just a test of the brand new blog, which will be updated sporadically or not at all, depending on how much of my electronic gear gets stolen during our travels.

This time we went to the war memorial. It's a very informative centre/museum, but it's sort of lost on me since i appearantly don't know much about Australian history. But clearly the Australians are very proud of their participation in various wars. I'm just wondering why this pride haven't stretched across the sea and into our history books... Apart from being the coldest place I've been in oz so far (damn aircon), The war memorial is definetely a place you need to spend a whole lot more th...

The weather in Canberra is always fine ;) With plenty of time, i only went to the Canberra Museum & Gallery and AUS National MuseumI was rather "gentle and quiet" this day =P Griffin Lake made me feel very relax ! Everywhere was silent~I could get very close to the nature~just 1 step ahead i could step inside the lake water ;PUnlike other places ,there's no need to concern about whether the people may damage the environment It's interesting~you can't find much people on the street...

A Day in Canberra
posted by:
Feb 09, 2008 - Aug 08, 2008
I didn’t want to stay any longer than a day in Camberra because I’m not really interested in government buildings or museums.  I’ve seen plenty along my way.  Having said that, I did visit the National Museum of Australia on Monday morning and spent a good couple of hours wondering around.  There is a surprising amount of information about aboriginal culture, which is hard to find and nobody wants to talk about.  The previous evening I took a walk to the new Parliame...

For the first time on this trip, we hopped in a car, left the city behind, and headed toward the countryside… in this case, the rural land between Sydney, Australia’s largest city, and Canberra, Australia’s capital city.  (One should keep in mind that Australia really only has ten or so “major” cities: the two aforementioned plus Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane, Cairns, Hobart (capital of Tasmania), Alice Springs, and Darwin.  When you go to an airport at on...

What a surprise to find ourselves with a truckie in his lorry!!  Understand the aussie style of speaking?!  Lucky for me, I'd already gotten familiar with these terms, so it was a little easier for me to get by here.  Anyway, getting back to my point, we were really thrilled and quite shocked that a trucker actually picked us up during our trip down south.  'Til now hitchhiking in Australia has worked out pretty well for us, but never had we been given a lift in a tracto...

so, here goes for my first proper 'backpacking' experience! up at 5am to head into the city to catch bus. met a couple of people before getting on bus, only 13 of us which was good as the bus can take 24. and everyone speaks english, which is always handy! i sat next to a girl called liz who is the same age and also a nursery nurse! everyone friendly, driver, cheryl seems cool too. we drove a couple of hours before our first toilet and brekkie stop at mittagong. most of the others had slept...
