Nice Urban River Walk Jul 07, 2011
If you're in Richmond Va I highly recommend that you go to the old shipping/factory district, "Shockoe Bottom". These days it's all trendy lofts, nice restaurants, bars and dance clubs and one or two museums. It is, as the name suggests, the lowest point in Richmond. As such, the James river runs right through it, resulting in the giant "flood walls" that keep the river out in case of flood (this only works sometimes) and the canal to divert a chunk of the river through the city.

They made this canal into a nice tourist attraction by putting sidewalks and romantic little bridges around a section of it. Low, soft light illuminates it at night and there are planters of flowers and comfortable benches all around. You can sit and watch the river flow through the city or you can have a bite to eat or a drink at one end and then walk through it to the other end to finish your night.

It's off the beaten track enough that it's not totally overwhelmed with people, but it's close enough to everything that you can easily walk over and walk off your dinner without blistering your feet in your nice, night time shoes. Restaurants a block or two away all along it and both ends have both a restaurant and a show venue (the Hat Factory, the Canal Club). I'd highly recommend going to a show at one end, walking along it and having dinner/drinks at the other end...or vice versa!
