With an estimated population of 1,121,000 as of 2004, Can Tho, from "cam thi giang" meaning river of poems, is the biggest city in the Mekong Delta. It constitutes as an independent municipality of Vietnam and is located on the south bank of the Hau River, 169 km from Ho Chi Minh City. The weather in Can Tho is tropical and monsoonal with two seasons: rainy from May to November and dry from December to April. Temperature averages at 27 °C.

Can Tho City is divided into eight districts: Ninh Kieu, Binh Thuy, Cai Rang, O Mon, Phong Dien, Co Do, Vinh Thanh and Thot Not.

Can Tho is famous for it's bird garden (Bang Lang). Ninh Kieu port, and its floating markets Cai Rang and Phung Hiep, where items are bought and sold on the river. The people of Can Tho have a reputation of being welcoming, where everyone smiles and are friendly. There is even a saying from the Vietnamese that goes:

"Cần Thơ gạo trắng nước trong
Ai đi tới đó lòng không muốn về"

Heute mußte ich sehr früh aufstehen, denn um 07:00 Uhr war Abfahrt zum "Floating Market". Das heißt, wir sind mit dem Bus zum Hafen gefahren und sind dort in ein Boot umgestiegen. Eigentlich waren es zwei solcher Märkte, der erste war in Cai Rang. Dieser Markt besteht im wesentlichen aus Booten, auf denen Einheimische ihre Waren, meist Lebensmittel oder Kleidung, anbieten. Excellent trip w/2 friends & vietnamese guides leading the way. We went trekking & mountainbiking outside of Dalat, and windsurfing in Mui Ne, as well as your basic sightseeing stuff in Saigon & the Mekong Delta.
