As we surfaced from the guesthouse at 5.30am the first fingers of light were just beginning to streak a still dark sky. The local streets were a hive of activity, shops and vendors already doing a roaring trade. We met our boatman, Han, and we were loaded up with bread, bananas and mugs…

One of my most stirring moments in Saigon occurred in the oldest Western-orientated section of Saigon. Here, among the shrines to past colonialism and Western exploitation, I walked into what appeared to be another bar, only to discover a decoration of scantily-dressed young women, perhaps 15 in al…

These are some photos and a few journal entries I wanted to share from my first solo backpacking trip. It lasted 9 months.
In retrospect, I wish I had been on this site to write a blog in real time and learn from all the people here. Also, I just love seeing that map Travbuddy draws up outlining my route! I'll be adding my photos whenever I find some time so bare with me while I get them them up.

Excellent trip w/2 friends & vietnamese guides leading the way. We went trekking & mountainbiking outside of Dalat, and windsurfing in Mui Ne, as well as your basic sightseeing stuff in Saigon & the Mekong Delta.

Its hard to put into words my feelings about Vietnam. I leave with mixed emotions about a country with a rich heritage and tremendous potential. I had some truly amazing experiences, but my lasting impressions will be of a people that put money above all else... (ie China)
In order to get a real feel for Vietnam, you MUST get off the Lonely Planet path. Its a watered-down experience to be honest. You're treated like a walking wallet. Get away from that scene and you'll see Vietnam...

I now wish I had written this

my crap including my note book. Therefore this entry will be a very
quick summary of what I briefly remember. The tour cost I think
$17 for a 2 day tour, we arrived at My Tho by bus, and was loade…

The Worst Hotel Room In Vietnam
En route to Phu Quoc Island it was necessary to over-night in Can Tho. My bank account was looking decidedly malnourished, so I decided to go for the cheapest accommodation possible.
The place I found was about $5 per night, which seemed very decent…

Having had a good old ramble around Saigon and most of the sights, I was ready for a change of pace, so signed up for a one night two-day tour of the Mekong Delta region.
I couldn't believe how cheap the tour was, or how most in Vietnam seem to be - this was about a tenner for…

That was not the best of nights. This is not the best of mornings. I am far from 100 percenting today, but the show, this rather excruciating show, must unfortunately go on… and on. Nothing more than a dry baguette and an uninspired omelette to sustain me. Travelling once …

Photos to follow!!! We took the 2 day Mekong Delta trip from Saigon but instead of coming back to Saigon on the second day, we will be taking the bus onto Rach Gia then onto Phu Quoc the next day.
