Camping Sodankyla Nilimella is a sizeable campsite in Lapland situated alongside the Kitinen River.

At the immediate entrance to the site the reception is located where one can enjoy a cup of tea, coffee or a snack and use the Wi-Fi internet (which is available only here).

The site is clearly divided into sections: wooden cottages, caravan spaces (most with electricity outlets) and extensive grassy tent space with or without shade.

These sectors are serviced by separate sets of service buildings: one service building belongs to the cottage area, 2 service buildings including 2 kitchens (a bigger and a smaller one), hot showers and toilets as well as sauna (these must be booked with the reception desk). Additionally, the campsite offers facilitates for the disabled travellers. And let’s not forget about a laundry room with a laundry machine, a dryer and a drying cabinet.

A sandy river beach offering variety of recreational activities is within the grounds. One can relax, go swimming or fishing at their own convenience. Additionally, bikes can be rented at the reception.

The whole region is ideal for walking and birdwatching; there are plenty of well-marked paths which take you right into the wilderness.

This time we no longer indulged in sleeping in comfortable cabin. We were determined to put up our tent, pump up our mattress, burn our stinky mosquito repellent and hopefully go to sleep peacefully.

When we arrived there were barely any tents (wonder why) set up at the campsite. So we had nearly the entire area to choose from to pitch the tent. For obvious reasons, we picked the spot away from others but still close enough to the service buildings.

The grass was still wet from earlier rain, and once the tent was ready for the night, we got showered and were off to sleep.

As in many places before, the kitchen and the bathing/toilet areas are kept neat and clean.

I really liked the site as it was mostly grassy and the grass was kept in good condition. The service buildings are evenly spread out through the site so no one needs to walk very far to get to them. Being away from the main road you do not hear any street noise.

One-night tent spot plus 2 people cost us an astounding €16 (with Camping Card Europe). Well on the budget.
