Camp by the Riverside Apr 05, 2012
This was my second trip to Rishikesh .. a small town about 250 kms north of Delhi for a White water rafting & camping experience with a bunch of friends .

Rishikesh is a holy town through which the holy river .. The Ganges flows . As you move up ahead of the town into the mountains the Ganges becomes extremely beautiful as it flows through the montains .. & at the same time also a river to enjoy White water rafting as it mightily flows forward creating some of the most amazing rapids for rafting adventures in India.

Camps have become a part of rafting experiences ahead of Rishikesh .. finding one which would be located well on a long weekend is quite a daunting task . Finally we zeroed down on Camp Remo & after I spoke to the camp owner on the phone personally ... I was quite satisfied that we would be treated well at the camp .

The drive to Rishikesh from Delhi is quite tiresome & frustrating . 7 hrs later when we reached there , the first sight of the camp was quite encouraging . Situated on a white sand beach right on the river , the camp looks inviting with its white swiss cottage tents pitched in a straight line .

One has to trek down a bit from the road where they had a raft ready to take us across the river to the camp. Two guys helped us with our luggage . The river flow is quite strong so the raft has to be maneuvered with the flow so as not to flip over .

The Tents are nice & clean with a printed inner lining inside making it a bit decorative . Two cots and a small table is all that is inside . The tents are 12 feet by 12 feet so quite spacious from a camp tent point of view . All the tents face the river so one can sit outside the Tent and just enjoy nature & its beauty .

There was a Dining Tent where all meals were served right from breakfast to Dinner . Breakfast was the usual Breads , Eggs , coffee , milk , tea & an Indian dish . Lunch was vegetarian Indian dishes . Dinner had barbecued chicken , peanuts , potato wedges ( as starters ) while you start enjoying your drinks as the evening sets in . The main course again had one non-vegetarian dish ( usually chicken ) , some vegetarian Indian dishes , Indian breads , salad & a desert.

The location of this camp is brilliant since the beach on which this camp is located has a gradual gradient sloping down in to the river unlike most other camps where there is a steep fall in the river . So it was fun just sitting by the water and walking into the icy cold waters of the Ganges . Well we also chilled our beers in the river :))))

There is no electricity at the camp so they provide kerosene lamps at night outside every tent .. which looks quite nice actually .. Water is scarce so has to be used judiciously .

They had a shower built in a room built out of leaves & hay with the floor of loose round stones facing the river .. quite an experience actually taking a batch in a 'Natural bathroom' with ice cold water !!! The toilets are dry pit toilets since flush toilets are not allowed near the river .. but I must say that the whole team of people employed at the camp made sure that the toilets were clean at all times .

The camp organises beginners rock climbing & rappling on the nearby rocks . They also have night treks organised to a nearby waterfall and on the rock mountain behind it . Finally of course a Rafting trip was included which was to raft about 30 kms on the Ganges going through 12 - 14 rapids varying from Grade 1 to Grade 4 . The rafts , safety arrangements & rafting instructors were simply perfect so we had a great time .

The overall experience was satisfactory in all terms from the camp to the location , the food and the rafting trip . The owner is a friendly guy who was present at the camp on all our days and made sure that everyone was comfortable & happy.
