Great Veterans Museum Mar 29, 2017
Fort Gordon Johnston was established in 1942 to train U.S. Soldiers in jungle warfare and to train them in amphibious landings on nearby beaches in preparation for D-Day. Today the spirit of Camp Gordon Johnston has been revived as a 5000 square foot museum depicting the camp, the life of the soldiers, and the training they received. The museum is expanding to include other wars with an emphasis on local veterans. They are collecting money to build a replica of a Higgins Boat like the ones used on the beaches at Normandy. The museum has honored by the Smithsonian Magazine the last three years. Very well done and interesting museum. Hours are 1 PM to 4 PM Monday through Thursday, 12 PM to 4 PM on Friday and 10 AM to 4 PM on Saturday. Closed on Sunday. Admission is FREE; but donations help with expenses and expansion.
