A serene urban nature reserve Aug 14, 2015
Created from derelict land in 1984, Camley Street Natural Park is a little oasis of calm in the hustle-bustle district of Kings Cross. Sandwiched as it is between the train tracks and Regent’s Canal, you’ll be surprised to hear that the urban noise is so effectively muffled by the thicket of trees overhanging the leafy woodland trails, that you might even temporarily forget that you’re in London. Quite incredible, considering you can walk to it from Kings Cross/St Pancras station in less than 10 minutes.

Whether you’re a stressed-out Londoner seeking some peace and quiet, a traveller with half an hour to kill whilst waiting for a train, or a family looking for a fun day out, this place has a wide appeal. Excellent information boards dot the pathways to help the visitor understand the assorted creatures that live among the foliage. Birds and insects fly around you on the paths and crowd the pond, where kids have the chance to go ‘pond dipping’ for underwater creatures. Near to the pond is a platform from which you can enjoy a fine view of Regents Canal too.

The team of volunteers who run the park have enhanced it further with their man-made creations, all made from recycled and natural materials. These include a log-pile home for beetles, a floating forest garden tethered to the bank of the canal and a mini colony of beehives. The staff can be found in the visitor’s centre, where a charmingly ramshackle series of displays provide information on the history and operation of the park, should you have any questions or need help.

This two-acre wildlife refuge is overseen by the London Wildlife Trust, whose stated aim is to protect the city’s wildlife and natural spaces. Given that Kings Cross is an area that has undergone extensive redevelopment in recent years, largely thanks to St Pancras station being the main UK hub for Eurostar, the fact they have managed to maintain the park so effectively is testament indeed to their excellent work.
