Average stay for Erice - great breakfast pastries Aug 01, 2014
The Ulisse Camere is located in a quiet area of Erice, with some views overlooking Trapani and the Egadi Islands, but a bit of an uphill walk to the city center. Erice sits on top of a mountain, San Giuliano, and walking here is rather up and down depending on where you are going, so not uncommon to be walking uphill from a number of hotels in this city to reach the center. It should be kept in mind too that Erice is a place somewhat of the past and many of the hotels are not what one would call the finest quality. They tend to be a bit damp and musty sometimes, with heating that is rarely adequate if it works at all and air conditioning is unheard of. There are frequent occasions in Erice also where the power goes out, so this is not the fault of any particular hotel in Erice and just the state of affairs in the city.

The hotel has upper level and ground level rooms, all centered around an open air courtyard, which is very pleasant with some flowers and decorated ceramic tiles. The first room we were given on the lower level experienced some problems with a water leak, so we were given another room nearby, also on the ground level just off the courtyard. There are outside metal staircases to reach the upper level and also a winding metal staircase that leads to an upper platform which affords some nice views of the surrounding area. The rooms are not particularly large and rather dark inside with small windows to the outside for the only source of natural light, which isn’t much. The bathroom isn’t much larger than a small closet and a tight squeeze for washing up and showering. The bed is big, but rather a lumpy uncomfortable mattress and the room smells musty.

There are worse places in Erice and I have visited here many times to experience a number of hotels, so I can’t complain too much, relatively speaking, on the stay here at Ulisse Camere in 2005. One feature of the place that is quite charming is the office & breakfast room. Very nice here to enjoy a selection of pastries, juice and coffee in the morning. The lady who runs the place is quite friendly and accommodating, always with a friendly greeting in the mornings. These are not the normal run of the mill pastries, but hand made in Erice at one of the local pasticcerias and while each day had something from the previous day, there was always something new to try too. One of my favorites was the half moon shaped cassatelle, filled with ricotta cheese mixed with chocolate chips or lemon and dusted with powered sugar. This was the best thing about the place and I ate my fill of these during my stay here.

I returned here in 2014 to have a look at the place and see how it had fared in the span of almost a decade since I stayed here. It appears to have undergone a renovation, at least from the looks of the outside courtyard. The stairway leading to the upper level has been totally reconfigured. Some of the stonework also appears to have been restored and/or redone. The style of the doors and windows also looked different and appear to have been replaced, It looked good, but thought the charm had been sacrificed a bit in my opinion. I can not speak about the rooms and whether they had been refurbished as well as I was not a guest here in 2014. Oddly enough, however, the large sign for the hotel was much the worse for wear and in very bad shape. One would think that during the process of refurbishing the courtyard they would have had the sign restored or replaced as well.
