Cambridge Backpacker Hostel Newcastle Reviews
Cambridge Backpacker Hostel Jan 01, 2011
The location is pretty poor as it is a good 20 minute walk from the main town centre, but it only goes downhill from there. The dingy looking exterior is matched equally by the repulsive interior; when has the colours green, yellow, black, and white ever been a good combination? That’s the fusion the 1970’s-looking bathrooms contain. To the plus side, the bathrooms and hallway are cleaned daily, but that’s about the only positive to this highly over-priced hostel. For the entire floor one male toilet, and one female toilet, with two showers each is less than adequate, and despite the daily cleaning, it doesn’t take much for poor hygiene to kick in.
The beds are adequate and linen is provided. The kitchen has almost enough room for a single person to spin in, and the utensils are next to none existent. I actually never used a normal sized bowl in all the time I stayed there; actually I never ever saw a normal sized bowl at all!
There is a reasonably social common area with an out-of-date TV, but with the entire premises being alcohol free as there is a bar downstairs, I see little point in hanging around there unless serious boredom sets in.
I would not recommend staying here at all, and for your $30 a night, I would suggest somewhere closer to town, or skip Newcastle off your itinerary altogether. I liked the city in a liveable sense, but not so much in a traveller sense.
