Wonderful experience. Guided overnight camel trip. Eat dinner and sleep with the locals. Make sure to bring water and a snack just in case (we enjoyed a meal of one part rice to one part sand).

Camal Safari in the Sahara Desert May 03, 2009
I just came back from a 14 day adventure tour of Morocco. The absolute highlight of my trip was the camal safari into the Sahara Desert. It starts in the late afternoon out of Merzouga, a wind swept town on the edge of the desert. It takes about two and half hours to reach the Berber campsite, just in time to climb North Africa's highest sand dune (the Erg Chebbi dunes) to watch the sunset in the endless landscape of perfectly orange sand. The Berbers prepared a wonderful meal of local soup and beef tanjine. We slept under a million magical stars. Next morning we got up early to see sunrise and to ride our camals back to Merzouga. April is the perfect time to go as the weather is still reasonable. It can go over 50 degrees Celcius in August.
