the charming small street that leads to a panoramic view of the city Aug 02, 2012
The road less travelled
Located between murcia and valencia, alicante has a lot to offer..the nightlife is vibrant, food and shopping is also something not to be missed, however i have a soft spot on the road less travelled because it is where you find the real gem. While foreigners are drawn to the beaches, i on the other hand was in search for something that is quite different....and voila, let me introduce the hidden street in the Old Barrio called, Calle Sta Cruz.
Calle Sta Cruz is a nice neighborhood. Here you can see the unpretentious life of the residents of alicante. People sit outside with their "abanico" (fan) talking and laughing with their neighbors. The small charming doors are also a sight to see...they are colorful and you would often find a letter or paper stuck on the door/window grills as there is no mailbox for every home. It actually reminds of the film "The Lord of the Rings"...some doors are too small that you might think it is for a hobbit :) Their walls also serve as a shrine as you would often see signs of religious practices stuck into it.
I also noticed that some houses are actually attached to a rock formation, or could be part of the building of the fortress. Once you get on the end of the street, you could actually have a nice panoramic view of the city.
The simple living in this part of the town has the warmest people. They are very open to visitors and are very interested to introduce more about their way of life.
