Eureka; the sate motto which means, I found it, is free, it’s architecturally stunning and it’s historically rich: You can get the complete history of California’s governors as you wander among their portraits in the squeaky-clean hallways. (Check out former Gov. Jerry Brown’s portrait on the third floor—painted in an unconventional abstract style compared to the other, more realistic gubernatorial portraits. No surprise.) And, who knows, you might run into the newly re-elected Governor himself. He moves around cautiously these days. Went by his new apartment in Mid-town Sacramento, not much to see, but there are some really good restaurants below. The capital has a very nice little gift shop on the lower floor full of books, replicas of historical documents and other souvenirs for friends and family. The galleries of both the senate and house chambers are generally open and you can see the government at work. There are lots of things to do and see, so set aside about an hour or so and enjoy the history and excitement of an open government. It is also good to know that the public can view the legislature, which reconvened on Jan. 3, in session from the viewing balcony on the third floor. Sessions typically start Mondays around noon and Thursdays at 9:30 a.m. check the daily file at the state Assembly or Senate websites to see what’s on the agenda. (916) 324-0333;

All around the spacious and colorful Capitol Park grounds are some well maintained variety of trees, flowers and those majestic tall palms that line the paths and streets around the capital. There are also some monuments and memorials dedicated to veterans and other prominent groups in the area.
