With the freeway systems and major highways around the country which divert traffic flows from the center of towns and cities each state has added Rest Stops to help keep drives happy. A chance to stretch your legs every hour to hour and a half makes these Rest Stops a helpful idea. And in most states, at least the ones I have been lucky enough to drive through, the state has created large restrooms with water, some even landscaped with grass, trees, and shrubs. Of course out in the desert you don't usually find a nicely manicured lawn but still a fairly nice building with restrooms. But of the areas I have traveled, with few exceptions, California has the worst Rest Stops of all. Poorly maintained, poorly supplied, and poorly services. And if there was a place where vending machines were supposed to be, chances are it is empty. There may be a map area, but usually it has been tagged, or otherwise de-faced, or destroyed. I wish we could be like Oregon, where very nice Rest Stops are the norm. Some even with coffee and cookies and a volunteer staff, probably from a service club, to serve them and keep the places clean.
