Calder and Hebble Navigation Feb 05, 2017
The Calder and Hebble Navigation is 21.5 miles which runs between Sowerby Bridge and Wakefield. The purpose of the navigation is to connect with the Aire and Calder Navigation. It was originally navigable to Halifax but extended to Sowerby Bridge in 1770. The Navigation links to the Yorkshire and Pennine waterways.

My first time walking on the navigation was from Mirfield to Thornes, near Wakefield. It is an interesting stretch passing through the outskirts of Dewsbury, Horbury and Calder Grove. A cut runs through Mirfield town centre and is easily accessible from the railway station.

As a walker, I'm not a fan of navigations which is usually made up of part-canal and part river. The walking terrain can be challenging particularly with the overgrown and muddy river beds and also the footpath diversions from rivers. This has an impact of the actual miles the walk is and also the time it takes to complete the stretch.
