Back in January 1999 I took a "Best of the Nile" tour in Egypt with 3 photographer friends of mine. Before dawn, and only 2 or 3 hours after arriving in Cairo, we set out on camelback to see the pyramids at Giza. I became deathly ill only hours into the trip. An illness that lasted for several weeks. I suspect it was the lukewarm tea I drank that first morning during the camel ride negotiations. Somehow, I managed to come home with some nice photos. Have a look and let me know what you think.

My first day in Cairo was pretty uninteresting. I spent most of the day sleeping. I did venture out when I first got there and tried some Kushary. That was some good stuff. And only 3 pounds too (5.5 pounds = $1). I met 3 American dudes at the restaurant. They'd …

Our first stop of the day was at the famous pyramids of Giza. Here you could easily walk back and for to the bases of the two largest pyramids, those of Cheops and Chephren. It wasn't that much of walk to get to the Pyramid of Mycerinus either. From the two larger pyramids, the Sp…

It’s been a year since I’ve been there .. and now I can say that Ï loved it … But to be honest with you .. I didn’t like when I was there. It was filthy and men are horrible,So one word of advice if you’re a female and going to these countries don’t go alone…
I went with shoestring on a group tour and it was great. You do have the feeling that your kind of a sheep following the herd.
The country is great and the sights are beautiful …

Hostel Dahab is what I would term as functional. Found it easily enough, and very cheap too, a roof-top place a stone's throw from the Cairo Museum, comfortable enough and a decent crowd of guests, many fairly long-term. Couple of Yanks, some English gypsies, Ruskies and the normal mix of western E…

Luckily Saqqara and Dahshur were not overrun by tourists. We hired a taxi to bring us to these destinations in the afternoon, and in Dahshur we almost had the site to ourselves, while the pyramids there were only slightly less impressive than the ones at Giza. Altogether we climbed into the burial …

Overnight train
to Cairo last
night, still feeling stiff and tired. Today we went to the Egyptian Museum,
to see the relics that were rescued from the various tombs (mostly in Luxour)
that were not comprehensively robbed, with about 100 000 items. The museum was
pretty interesting, but I am ve…

During the ride from the Cairo International Airport, visions of desert sands, date palms and statues of ancient pharaohs brought to mind scenes of Ramses II's exploits from the Hollywood classic The Ten Commandments. But when our driver Mahmoud, a proud local, pointed out the high-rise buildin…
