After dragging ourselves out of bed, Rachel and I checked out of the Serpent Hostel just before 10am. While we were loading our luggage back into the car, we tried to figure out what we should do to kill time before we could check in at the hotel in Kuranda after 3pm. We agreed it would be a very relaxed day, since we needed to get used to the heat and humidity and we also didn’t want to be tired for the wedding tomorrow. Our first, and unanimous, decision was to go and get som...

Australia... FINALLY!
posted by:
Jan 03, 2006 - Jan 19, 2006
Today I went white-water rafting on the Tully River.  My raft (Team F-Yeah) consisted of me, Louise (Aussie), Kristy (NY), Adam (UK), Andrew and Craig (Canadians) and our Kiwi guide Sunny.  The river had huge rapids and we flipped our boat several times.  I have so many bruises, cuts and scrapes and a horrible sunburn but it was worth it! Tonight we went out to the Woolshed for dinned and to dance.  They encourage you to dance on the tables and even have ledges clos...

Great Barrier Reef
posted by:
Jun 08, 2006 - Jun 27, 2007
Brian, Steph and myself took off on a sailing vessil to the Great Barrier Reef to do some diving.  It was a nice ride out there, on the way we saw some dolphins swimming next to the boat, we also learned what we needed to go diving since it was all our first time diving.  It really isn't that hard to do, just have to get used to clearing out the pressure in your head but that isn't that hard to do.  When we got to our destination we went down for the first dive.  The first...

On the train

Today we  were going to find Nemo - we were going snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef. We arrived at the marina just before 8.30am, and after some initial confusion over where to check in, we boarded our boat, the 'Reef Quest.' It seemed like an organised boat; we signed disclaimers (which in effect made us responsible for anything which might happen to us, which included drowning, being hit by another boat, or by being eaten alive by anything which happened to be swimming by) and...

Day 1: Cairns
posted by:
Jan 01, 2007 - Jan 15, 2007
Just finished diving the Great Barrier Reef.  I actually did NOT go out last night as I was spent from traveling yesterday and wanted to be well rested for my dive trip.  Overall, it was a really cool experience... I found Nemo (lots of 'em) and got to see lots of other things as well (i.e. a shark, rays, loads of colorful fish, etc.).  I'm now tired again and need a power nap before I go out tonight to celebrate my last night in Cairns.  Tomorrow I'll be making the 9 hour...

The journey from Cairns to Cooktown.
posted by:
Aug 06, 2008 - Aug 15, 2008
Exploring Cooktown Australia. The Journey there. We had only been in our lovely new home when Erle got the travel bug itch, we had just had the worst rain storm in decades that had kept us locked in-doors for several days, so he just asked the travel agent to get us plane tickets for Cairns as soon as possible; three days later at 7am, we were on the ferry from Picton to Wellington to catch the plane to Cairns! I can’t say I really wanted to go, I was just starting to relax and enjoy the ...

Cairns -Cape tribulation - Atherton
posted by:
Dec 07, 2007 - May 09, 2008
Cairn is a bustling tropical city because of its close proximity to the Great Barrier Reef, the rainforest region of the Atherton Tablelands and the exquisite palm-lined beaches to the north and south of the city. Cairns itself, population around 93 000, is located on coastal mudflats that attract an abundance of native bird-life that thrive in this environment. Cape Tribulation National Park covers a large coastal portion of the World Heritage listed Daintree National Park in Kuku-yala...

Our first two weeks in Australia.
posted by:
Jan 06, 2008
We arrived in Cairns late into the evening. Surprising we were not held up by customs at all, despite both wearing and declaring our muddy walking boots. We were greeted by thunderstorms, that lasted during our stay in Cairns. We had expected the hot, humid weather - but the thunder and lightning was like nothing we had experienced before. It hard to describe, but it was almost like you could feel it. Whatever, the storms were amazing and caused quite a few oohhh and ahhhs from the ...

After a prolonged series of tests in the hospital, I hot-footed it to the airport just in time to meet Warren to check in for our Virgin Blue flight to Cairns. It was lovely to see Warren after our last meeting in Cape Town in October '05. He hadnt changed a bit from what I remembered and we got to chatting bout the last two years. We arrived in Cairns two hours later and headed to our hostel, Calypso Inn, to Check in. A very cool place with a lovely and lively group of staff. They have ...

Australia is one of my favourite countries on the planet, and I've been there countless times! In 2004 my family went on a trip to Cairns, and there was just so much to do. We went hot-air ballooning, horseriding, parasailing and of course shopping, and I had tons of fun. Here are the pictures!

Well its my last day in Cairns today and tonight I'm out on a backpacker pub crawl. After nearly a week here I think I've got a feel of the place now. Cairns is the backpacker party capital of Australia. Travllers come here to relax and for a good time. The weather here is brilliant lots of sun although there is no beach so you have to make do with a large artifical lagoon. I've enjoyed my time here and could easily spend another week relaxing and partying. But its onwards to Noosa now f...

Hi, we have been in Cairns for a little over a week now. From the recent posts i have posted you will know what i have been getting up to here. To be honest Cairns isn't a place i could stay for too long, the Nightlife is ok plus there isn't that much to do in the day. The one thing it does have though is numerous booking agents that will do what ever it takes to make sure you have the best trips and activities.I've really enjoyed all the activities i have done so far.We are flying out ...

Cairns Day 1
posted by:
May 08, 2006 - Jun 22, 2006
We arrived in Cairns (pronounced "cans") this afternoon without anything scheduled.  Our plans were to roam around this seaside town, which seems to be the jumping off point for adventure seekers and outdoor recreation lovers: whitewater rafting, scuba diving, parasailing and skydiving, and a thousand other things.  The city has a hip, young feel to it; you don’t have to journey far in any direction to meet a gaggle of backpackers or thrill seekers. The city and countryside itsel...

Two and half weeks travelling the east coast to Sydney.

We arrived in to Cairns airport to be reunited with james and to meet Jane.  For the next few weeks two has become four!!  The hostel is really nice and with free breakfast and evening meal, we are in heaven.  We enjoyed a well deserved few drinks on day number two in Cairnes after a stressful day organising our route down the east coast and booking tour to Whitsunday and Fraser Island. On this evening the dancing moves were out again and we boogied to the early hours.&n...
