Cagayan Vacation Guide
Cagayan's name was derived from the Ilocano word "karayan" or river referring to the Rio Grande de Cagayan. Known as a paradise for spelunking, trekking and game fishing, Cagayan provides a never ending adventure with its host of natural attractions. Topping the list of the seven-chambered Callao Caves in Penablanca which is noted for its massive limestone and rock formations. The popular tourist spot also embraces Sierra Cave, Quibal Cave, the Odessa-Tumbali Cave System, Jackpot Cave, Roc and San Carlos Caves and the Pinacanauan River. Cagayan has a wide expanse of fine sand beaches along coastal towns, and in the islands of Palaui, Fuga, and Calayan. It is also an international sports fishin mecca because of the abundance of huge game fish in Sta. Ana town. Because of the deep religiosity of the Cagayanos, pilgrimage structures stand out as top tourist draws - the 400-year old Basilica Minore or Our Lady of Piat and the Iguig Calvary Hills. The Basilica, which is home to the Black Mary, is a National Shrine and pilgrimage site. Meanwhile, Calvary Hills is an 11-hectare complex with larger-than-life-size concrete 14 stations of the Cross. Other historic churches are the St. James the Greater Church in Iguig, St. Hyacinth Church or San Jacinto Chapel (1604), the St. Philomene Church in Alcala (1881), the San Jacinto de Polonia Parish in Camalaniugan which houses the oldest bell in the Far East, and the Sts. Peter and Paul Metropolitan Cathedral, seat of the Archdiocese of Tuegegarao and home to the largest Spanish-built church in the region.
