Sweets to die for Feb 26, 2017
Oh my, what can I say? Rephrase the famous saying “To see Venice and die” into “eat one of those Zanarini cakes and die”? Maybe, but then one could not eat another one... Yes, these cakes at Cafe Zanarini would be a reason for me to resettle in Bologna and eat myself through their cakes....

On my first full day in Bologna, after having had lunch in the yCorte Isolani and after having marvelled at the magnificent churches in Santo Stefano, I continued my walk through the southeastern part of town on my way to Archiginnasio. Just a few metres before I arrived there I saw the parasol sheltered outside seating of a cafe and thought that I’d better have a short rest and donate some caffeine to my system. But when I entered the cafe to see which kind of sweets I would order with my coffee I had another of this “Howard Carter moments”: “Can you see anything?” – “Yes, wonderful things”. I felt like a kid looking at a beautiful Christmas Tree when I saw these cakes in the shelves and it was darn difficult to select one. But since I love any kind of lemony things, I finally chose the “Sole di Sicilia” one. According to the description it was made with mousse from several citrus fruits and a core of tangerine jelly, covered with a jelly of citrus fruits. To give a better idea I took the second photo to show the inside. Oh joy.

These cakes are called “monoporzioni” and more of them are on their website: Zanarini’s products, each with a description of the contents. And yes, each of these is not cheap; when I was there in September 2014 I paid 6 Euro. But it was well worth it and, as I said, I would love to live closer by to go there once in a while.
