Drinking mint tea with the bees at Hassan II Square Oct 23, 2013
All over Morocco you can go drink mint tea. It is done by the locals to a huge extent with the locals (men) sitting in front of the cafés drinking mint tea - or occasionally coffee instead of the traditional mint tea. People can sit for hours chatting and watching the world go by in front of them.
So we decide it’s time to have yet another mint tea and we thought we had found a good spot for it here in front of Hassan II Square. Since there are a great view of the royal palace and it is generally fairly quite so we can just sit for a while taking in the palace and sip mint tea while deciding what to do for the rest of the afternoon.
But it turns out it is pretty difficult to drink mint tea here at the square. The tea arrives - but shortly after it comes to the table the first unwanted visitor arrives. A bee which wants to have a sip of the sugary liquid in the glass. And the bee got friends - lots of friends. After a minute we got a small flock of bees circling the glass and we have to try to protect them against the bees so we don’t get a bee down our throat when we take a sip of mint tea.
It’s difficult to drink the tea and it takes us quite a while since we have to fight off the bees before drinking - in addition to wait for the tea to cool down a bit. We manage to drink the tea without getting stung - so if you like a special experience while drinking mint tea - this is a good spot. If you are scarred of bees - probably not the best place for you.
