The strongest attribute of Café Regatta is probably the refuge it provides from tourist throngs across the street at the Sibelius Monument. But that is all gravy, because Café Regatta has many more strong points. Sitting on the coast of the Baltic Sea, gently lapping waves accent a sweet little cottage with ample outdoor seating that is wonderfully landscaped.

The lovely setting tees up a positive vibe, so all we need now is good food and good service to yield excellence. And while my judgment is qualified, I believe Café Regatta is up to snuff on both fronts. We only popped in for a drink, but my cup of coffee was quite good and very reasonably priced --- especially when you consider it was a) Helsinki, and b) next door to a bustling tourist attraction. Laura ordered a bottled soda, so we did not have a sufficient sample to pass along a reasonable assessment regarding the food. However, our neighbors all seem happily satisfied, and from the chatter I gathered Café Regatta’s cinnamon buns were a renowned treat - there were many ordered and the patrons gabbed about them with smiling faces. No doubt the friendly service contributed to the multitude of smiles as well, every staff member made us feel welcome and was eager to serve.

I’ll allow the pictures to the rest of the sales pitch. A delightful stop.

Quirky little cafe by the sea Jun 22, 2011
Cafe Regatta is unique. It's a very very small red hut or cottage by the seashore right next to a private boat harbor and a rowing stadium.

The cafe only offers very basic stuff like pastries, cinnamon rolls ("pulla" in finnish) sometimes blueberry pie, coffee and tea. The great thing though is the atmosphere: decorations both inside the cafe and out on the yard are quirky and some would say "kitschy". For instance, the yard has all kinds of plaques hung everywhere that are always stating the obvious like it says "this is a boat" written on the cafe's own rowing boat... In my opinion Cafe Regatta offers the experience of rural Finland in the capital and I cannot think of other place in Helsinki that does the same.

Even though the menu at the cafe is very limited you can enjoy even a barbecue feast. That's because you can bring your own stuff and grill it on the patio! Another peculiarity is that when you buy coffee (costs about 2 euros) every time you refill your cup, you get 10 cents back for it. Don't ask me why...

I warmly recommend this cafeteria to anyone who looks for a cozy but different kind of cafe experience. The best time to visit this place in my opinion is of course in the summer when the sun almost never sets here in Finland, either in the morning or in the evening. During the summer the opening hours are flexible. As one of the plaques on the yard says "Open every day from dusk till dawn".
