I normally don't like coffeeshops! Mar 07, 2017
With the exception of the Netherlands where the term coffeeshop has a completely different meaning, I really do not like them. The way Starbucks (in particular), Costa Coffee, Caffe Nero et al have taken over just about any town I visit in the world utterly appals me.

I will be the first to admit that I have a totally uneducated palate but for me a coffee is a teaspoon of some instant stuff, a bit of boiling water and a drop of milk. That is how it is made Chez planxty anyway and it does the job. OK, call me a peasant if you will but all this latte and cappucino (sp?) and whatever else is frankly a mystery to me.

Anyway, to get to the travel information part of the review now, we were driving through the delightful small town of Slave Lake and had stopped off for a look around to take some pictures and hopefully find something to interest us.

My friend Lynne is somewhat of a caffeine addict and so, in the absence of her preferred Starbucks we spied the FIX coffeeshop and bakery (proudly announced as having been established as early as 2015!) and that was it so in we went.

I have to say it was not exactly what I was expecting as I thought I had walked into an art gallery with an attached coffee bar. There were the most fantastic pieces of art on the walls, some for sale and some lent for the exhibition but all by local artists. I am certainly no art buff but to my untutored eye they seemed to be of a uniformly high quality. I include one image here as an example.

As stated, I am not much of a coffee afficianado but whilst Lynne was waiting for whatever convoluted confection she drinks I took the opportunity to have a look round. The first thing that caught my eye was the rather delicious looking selection of cakes and pastries all of which are apparently home-made as is the small but tasty looking offering of hot food (soup, sandwiches etc.).

A slightly more complete inspection of the establishemnt whilst the charming young lady with the wonderfully braided hair weaved her magic on the coffee machine indicated that this was very much a community orientated spot. There were lots of fliers about for forthcoming local events and the few patrons on a midweek early afternoon all added to the impression that this was a local meeting place. This was obviously THE venue for locals to meet and hang out as opposed to some hideous franchise.

In short, if I ever decide to drink coffee instead of alcohol, unlikely as that is, then FIX is exactly the kind of place I would do it in and it really does deserve the reader's patronage if they are ever round that way.
