Cafe Casablanca Amsterdam Reviews
Best Jazz Club/ Karaoke Place in Amsterdam Dec 30, 2008
Cafe Casablanca is a rather small bar located on the Zeedijk at the North end of the Red Light District in Amsterdam. I first heard about the bar from the Amsterdam Travbuddy Meet-up Forum. Our organizers had it listed as a Pre Meet-Up location for what they termed the Idol's meet-up. The Cafe is one of Amsterdam's famous Karaoke bars, it attracts many famous artists who perform at the bar throughout the year. When we were there however, we seemed to have the bar to ourselves. Finding the bar was pretty easy from my Hotel which was located right next to Central Station Amsterdam.
Dating back as early as 1945, Cafe Casablanca is one of the oldest and renown Jazz clubs in Amsterdam. During live performances the club is all about music, I experienced it first hand with my buddies when we danced away to performers. Some Travbuddies performed while the rest of us danced the night away. The rich history of this place recalls decades of jazz and drinking, the atmosphere of the venue is pretty cozy and welcoming. Live jazz performances on stage happens every Sunday to Thursday, and more or less every week the jazz loving crowd gets to shake heads and snap fingers to improvisations and big-band performances from Amsterdam’s jazz elite.
Weekends and Thursdays Casablanca turns into a karaoke show place, packed with enthusiasts. You will get to hear many laughs, many good singers and many famous Dutch songs before the end of the night. On the night we were there, two renown artists were playing, I confess I don't know who they were, but the bartender told us they were well recognized in Amsterdam. To be honest they sang pretty good. I must say though for as famous as the Cafe is, the place is rather small and can only accommodate so many people. I felt we were crowded in there and we were not even 40 at the Pre-meet. Well we did have other regulars joining in.Outside the Casablanca entrance, there is a display of the monthly program on the window.
