A little taste of Germany Aug 15, 2015
Located on Capitol Hill near Union Station, Cafe Berlin is just a short walk down Massachusetts Avenue from the train station. It advertises itself as having a 1920's style German ambiance, which is partially true, but mostly only by the wall decor composed of photos, plates and other art that may be indicative of early 20th century Germany. The rest of the layout is fairly contemporary. There is an outdoor patio in front and some dining rooms inside. The place was not very busy for a Saturday afternoon around 1pm, and just a few people on the patio area, while the inside dining rooms were empty. This is usually a bad sign when there's few patrons around. Maybe it picks up better at dinner time than at lunchtime.

Sampled a 1/2 liter Hefeweizen, which was good and reminded me of Germany certainly. An order of Kartoffel Pfannkuchen (Potato pancakes, house made apple sauce, sour cream) was sampled too. It was ok, but nothing particularly special and not a very large serving either. The Hefeweizen was $8 and the potato pancakes $7, a bit overpriced perhaps, but it is DC too, and food is generally on the overpriced side anyway. For a more inspired atmosphere perhaps it would be worth the extra price, but overall it is not something I would go out of my way to return to. Maybe some other dishes are worth trying here if you don't mind spending a bit extra for a little taste of Germany. The waiters are very polite and helpful, which is a plus.

Good point, Bill, and I had not thought of that. It's a bit off the tourist areas, so they may rely on business from the working crowd.

I suspect their business drops off when Congress is in its August recess. When all the staffers and interns return after Labor Day things probably pick up.
