Árhús, in the Middle of a Roundabout Aug 17, 2014
A satisfactory place to fill your tummy, if not a wonderful dining experience.
Though there seemed to be a fair amount of table space (in the middle of nowhere), we had to wait a bit to be seated. I think the owner runs the adjacent lodging space and suspect a lot of traffic comes from those guests. We enjoyed the kitschy interior populated with an assortment of knick knacks (winter gear, b&w pictures, etc.).
I ordered the Atlantic Char, the catch of the day, and it was good. The wait staff was rather slow in serving and paying attention to clientele, but this was our entrée to Icelandic service so no clue whether this was typical? Another plus of the restaurant was some pleasant views of a pond just outside and the scenic plains extending in all directions.
My guess was about 20% of the crowd was local (i.e., not tourists), clearly weighing as a plus. But as I’ve only been in the country a few hours my ability to judge could clearly be astray. There was some sticker shock when we paid the bill, though the coming days would teach us how reasonable Café Árhús prices were!
