"Fabulous French Food Fast.." Jul 07, 2012
Are all chains the same? Well no, they are not. And neither are all shops within a chain the same; some are better than others.

Take the Café Rouge Express at Euston Station, London. It’s part of the Café Rouge chain of French bistros, offering a ‘taste of France’ across the UK. All Café Rouge cafés I have visited so far, from St Albans, to Brighton, to Exeter, are merveilleux – but there is truly something extraordinaire about the Café Rouge Express at Euston Station.

On the concourse outside the Euston train station in north central London, the Café Rouge Express stands aloof from all the other cafés and restaurants that surround it. Perched above some steps just opposite the main entrance to the station, its rippling red umbrellas act as a welcoming beacon, either to sit outside if the weather is fine, or to walk inside through the swing doors. Place your order at the glass counter, where the uniformed international staff are bound to greet you with a sanguine smile and a warm-hearted hello.

I’ve been coming here for a couple of years now, ever since my previous favourite café at Euston station, Puccino’s, mysteriously disappeared and was replaced by a Sainsbury’s supermarket. For a while, I felt lost. Where now to meet friends, old and new, when taking the 30 minute train ride from my home town to Central London?

The Café Rouge Express has undoubtedly excelled as a worthy and superior replacement. It’s not just the freshly prepared food, such as my favourite: Salad Poulet or Niçoise, sometimes with tempting French fries; supplemented by a generous cup of Americano coffee sitting alongside a jug of hot milk, or maybe a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon; followed by a delicious Apple Chausson French pastry.

Nor just that the service is speedy – this is ‘fabulous French food fast’, and it needs to be if you are going to catch your train on time.

Nor just the fact that it has consistently reliable free wi-fi, so useful when I just want to sit solo in the corner with my computer and catch up with my emails.

Nor just either the wonderful feeling of sitting outside, perched under one of those signature red umbrellas, when the sun is shining, the Euston station concourse is constantly changing with a colourful kaleidoscope of bustling rail passengers, and the station loudspeakers occasionally punctuate your thoughts or conversation with news of the train arriving at platform 9...or leaving platform 14.

Yes, all that makes the experience special. But there is something else that guarantees the return journey to Café Rouge Express Euston is a sure ticket. The staff.

French in spirit, but international in flavour. From Poland, Hungary, Spain, Italy and more... All the staff have an interesting story to tell; some waiting for a season, others staying much longer, and providing a welcoming familiar face.

I have always found the staff members at Café Rouge Euston to be friendly, helpful, interested and above all, enthusiastic. It’s said actions speak louder than words, and these words I don’t just write. On either arrival or departure from Euston train station in London, I will almost always pop in to the Café Rouge. If it wasn’t there, or the staff were no longer the same, you can be sure that I would simply go straight to or from my train – without even a look back in hunger.
